I didn't know my husband when the details of this story happened, but it is something he talks about quite often!!!

My late father-in-law was caretaker of one of their local schools. When he went to lock up the school, my husband and his mate would sometimes go over with him.

On one occasion, my husband and his mate were playing football in the large hall while he locked up the school.

As my husband looked up, he saw a skull floating half way up on the wall. He told his mate to look at it, and it stayed there for some time.

All I can say is, I am glad I wasn't there!!!

Good heavens: More than half of Britons believe in life after death and a third think ghosts exist

More than half of Britons believe in heaven, according to researchers.

While 55 per cent think it exists, 27 per cent believe in reincarnation, the survey of 2,060 respondents found.

Surprisingly for those who believe society has become increasingly secularised, a similar poll in 1955 showed that only 47 per cent believed in an afterlife.

The latest study - published today by the theology think-tank Theos - also shows that 39 per cent believe in ghosts and 70 per cent believe there is such a thing as the human soul.

A further 22 per cent believe in astrology or horoscopes and 15 per cent believe in fortune-telling or Tarot.

London had the highest proportion convinced by the supernatural, with more than half believing in ghosts.

But Scotland had the highest proportion of people who believe in fortune-telling or Tarot (18 per cent) and Wales the highest of believers in reincarnation (32 per cent).

Overall, belief in the supernatural appears to have declined slightly from a similar Mori poll in 1998.

But the paranormal still has far more convinced than in 1951, when a Gallup poll found only 10 per cent believed in ghosts, 6 per cent in astrology and 7 per cent in Tarot.

Theos director Paul Woolley said: 'The Enlightenment optimism in the ability of science and reason to explain everything ended decades ago.

'The extent of belief will probably surprise people, but the finding is consistent with other research we have undertaken.

'The results indicate that people have a very diverse and unorthodox set of beliefs.'

Social research, Geoffrey Gorer, in his 1955 study, Exploring English Character, found that 47 per cent of people believed in the afterlife.

The national study explored English attitudes to everything from superstition to sex and generated more then 15,000 questionnaires.

Llancaiach Fawr ghost tour

Whilst I was in college about 10 years ago, one of our projects was to choose a topic and do a presentation. One of the groups decided to do a tour of Llancaiach Fawr Manor House in Nelson near Merthyr Tydfil, South Wales.

They asked if anyone else wanted to come along. Of course I jumped at the chance with a few friends of mine. We arrived at the Manor House and were introduced to our guide, before being directed into the grounds of the house where the eerie tales began.

After a short story, we proceeded into the house. I instantly felt abit uneasy, due probably to my vivid imagination, but this would prove to get worse as we explored the house.

After a little while, we proceeded up to the next floor, where at one point we were stood in a corridor with a door at the end. I was nearest the door which I wasn't very happy about as supposedly there was a spirit that paced the corridor.

Whilst there, we were stood opposite some spiral stairs, and were told about someone's previous visit where they were stood in the same place as us, and a ball of light shot up the stairs towards the group!!! This really helped my uneasy feeling!!!

The tour was very atmospheric, and if you want to be scared, is well worth the visit. You can stay overnight at certain times if you are brave enough!!!!!

Although I was scared, I did enjoy it, and returned some years later with my sister. The tour was still as enjoyable as my first visit!!!!

York ghost walk with Andy Dextrous

During our holiday to York in September 08 we decided, as we love ghost walks, to try the "Andy Dextrous" experience. We are so glad we did. It was entertaining and intriguing with interesting true ghost stories linked to the area to be heard!!!

Andy certainly created a very eerie atmosphere at the right times, and added some amusing pranks along the way too. I have added a link to his ghost tour site and some photos we took whilst on the walk. I would definitely recommend his ghost walk if you ever find yourself in York. We will be doing it again if we go back there!!!!

Castle figure wins 'ghostly' competition

An eerie picture of a figure in period costume at the window of a Scottish castle has won a competition to find the world's most convincing "ghostly image".

The picture, taken in May 2008, appears to show a man or woman wearing a ruff, looking through a barred window at Tantallon Castle in North Berwick, East Lothian.

No mannequins are used at the castle, and there are no costumed guides. Three photographic experts have confirmed that the photograph was not manipulated.

Christopher Aitchison, a visitor who took the photograph said: "I was not aware of anyone or anything being present in my picture, only noticing the anomaly when I got home. I did not notice any nice old ladies wearing ruffs walking around the stairs!

"Some people have suggested it's just light reflecting on rocks, and one person suggested it may be King James V of Scotland."

Detailed examination of the picture shows it was not manipulated

Psychologist Professor Richard Wiseman, who has made many studies of the supernatural, launched the investigation a month ago. He asked members of the public to submit ghostly images for experts to analyse.

More than 250 pictures were received from all over the world, and there was then a public vote on which people thought were the most convincing photos.

Camera shy

Professor Wiseman, himself a confirmed ghost sceptic said that the importance of faces to our lives means our brains are programmed to see them even where they don't exist: "I suppose it could be another visitor looking a bit strange. Perhaps someone will come forward."

The study is part of the Edinburgh International Science Festival, and will be discussed at a one day public festival called "Hauntings" which will examine the evidence for the existence of ghosts.

Co-organiser Dr Caroline Watt from Edinburgh University said: ""Even though we had the public submit their most mysterious photographs, the images we received don't provide compelling evidence for spirits. If ghosts are out there, it seems they are somewhat camera shy. "

My first entry will be my most recent weird experience which only happened two nights ago. It was 4.30am. I heard a noise which seemed to come from right beside me. I turned around and my husband had heard it too. It was pretty loud and sounded like something plastic falling off the chest of drawers. I thought at first maybe my duvet had hit something off, but I checked and nothing was amiss. We checked again in the morning and several times since and we cannot see anything that would have caused it. This is just one of many experiences I have had and these will follow shortly.
